Just about as recurring as the seasons: CO’s DUI campaigns

Is the heat actually ever turned off?

The answer to that question is arguably “no,” at least when it comes to Colorado’s recurring The Heat is On DUI-crackdown initiative.

Residents across the state are intimately familiar with that enforcement effort.

And it is eminently understandable that they are. The Heat initiative always seems to be either in operative mode or poised to start once again soon after a completed campaign. In fact, Heat enforcement periods are staggered throughout the year (every year), being timed to coincide with noted holiday periods and events. Truly, not much time ever does elapse between one campaign’s completion and the onset of another.

The present suffices well to illustrate that roadway reality. Colorado law enforcement agencies operating under the oversight of the state’s Department of Transportation just recently concluded their annual Halloween Heat program, with another now being slated to commence in its near wake. A media report on Heat-linked enforcement periods and related DUI arrests now notes the imminent kickoff of Heat’s next effort. That will commence this upcoming Friday on November 22 and run for a 10-day period through the Thanksgiving holiday.

Do the escalated efforts of police agencies in Denver and spanning the state yield an appreciable uptick in DUI arrests and convictions during Heat campaigns?

There is no doubt about that. Officials with the CDOT state that the participation of 90-plus enforcement agencies across the state during Halloween’s campaign helped secure the arrests of 228 drivers over a five-day period.

Officials predict a much higher number of DUI stops during the next campaign ushered in this Friday.
