April Fool’s Day DUI ‘joke’

On Behalf of | Apr 1, 2015 | Repeat DUI/DWAI Offenders |

Denver Broncos fans likely remember linebacker Bruce Irvin of the Seattle Seahawks. He played on Seattle’s winning side in Super Bowl XLVIII. Irvin has made a few headlines in his short career, including his four-game suspension to start the 2013 NFL season for violations of the league’s substance abuse policy.

He also made a few headlines this morning when he took to Twitter to joke about a DUI he claimed happened last night “after I had a few drinks.” He promised to work hard to regain the trust of his team and the fans. A few minutes later came Irvin’s punchline: “Haha April fools!!!”

So he wasn’t arrested for drinking and driving and he doesn’t have to work hard to regain the trust of the fans and the team. Or does he? It seems many who saw his comments on Twitter were not in the least amused. It would not surprise many observers of the NFL to see Irvin find out that his sense of humor isn’t as funny as he imagines.

Could a fine be in order? We’ll see. As a past violator of substance abuse rules, he might have tweeted himself into making a donation to league coffers.

We’ll see if Irvin turns out to be the fool on this April first.

Like everyone else who woke up this morning without a DUI hanging over their head, Irvin should be glad he doesn’t have legal penalties ahead. Instead, all he has are the easily avoidable problems he has created for himself.
