If you’re resting on some inside info and think you stand a good shot at delivering the right answer to the above-posed headline in today’s blog post, fire away.

Otherwise, aim high.

Really high. Even if you pick what you think is an unquestionably large number to accurately hit upon the number of anti-DUI crackdowns carried out by Colorado enforcers each year, we suspect that you might guess low.

Five? Ten? Do police bodies all across the state collectively marshal resources as often as even a dozen times every year to identify and snare drunk drivers over an extended timeframe surrounding holidays and public events?

Try 14. That is the answer delivered by one state media outlet recently spotlighting Colorado’s regularly recurring and highly visible impaired-driving initiatives.

Are those efforts worthwhile? Do they yield material benefits from a considered cost-benefit analysis?

Well, this much is borne out once the numbers are crunched in the aftermath of their abbreviated lives (typically a few days to a couple weeks in duration): So-called The Heat Is On enforcement campaigns result in many criminal charges being filed. A cited 10-day crackdown during this period last year reportedly netted 656 arrests statewide.

That is unsurprising, given that more than 100 agencies spanning the state customarily participate in the exercises. The Colorado Department of Transportation funds the initiatives, with its deep pockets being evidenced by saturation patrols, sobriety checkpoints and a notably beefed-up police presence out on state roads and highways.
