The hidden costs of a DUI conviction in Colorado

On Behalf of | Apr 23, 2018 | Firm News |

Depending on the circumstances, the penalties for driving under the influence (DUI) can be quite severe in Colorado, including possible jail time, license revocation, community service, probation and a large fine, just to name a few.

But, if you think the fine is the only financial cost associated with a DUI, you couldn’t be more wrong. In fact, there are many additional costs you may have to cover, including:

  • Transportation Costs: Once you lose your license, you will need to find other modes of transportation to get you around — and this can add up over time.
  • License Reinstatement Fees: Even if you are able to get your license back, you may be responsible for paying various reinstatement fees.
  • Insurance Costs: As soon as you get your license back, you will likely find that your insurance rates have gone up. In some cases, your rates can double, or even triple.
  • Ignition Interlock Device (IID) Fees: Many DUI offenders — particularly repeat offenders — will be ordered to install IIDs on their vehicles if they want to drive. And guess is responsible for paying for the installation, maintenance and administration of these devices? That’s right, you are.
  • Towing And Bail Fees: If you are arrested for suspected DUI, you will have to cover the cost of towing your vehicle, as well as possible bail to get out of jail.
  • Employment Costs: For many professions, including truck drivers, nurses, doctors and teachers, a DUI conviction can put their professional licenses at risk. Even worse, future employers may see your DUI conviction if they run a background check.

Considering the many costs associated with a DUI, it is often a good idea to just find another ride home after a night out. However, if you have already been accused of violating Colorado’s DUI laws, it may be a good idea to fight the charges — or at least do everything possible to get the charges reduced. After all, having a DUI conviction hanging over your head is never a good thing.
