Colorado law enforcement has started 5-week DUI crackdown

Spring may be here, but before you go out and celebrate the end of another long winter with a few drinks, be advised that police are going to be out in full force the next several weeks.

In fact, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), the Colorado State Patrol (CSP) and local law enforcement departments across the state are currently joining forces to crack down on impaired drivers. This increased DUI enforcement period, which actually started last week, will continue until May 14.

Nearly 2,000 drivers arrested last year

This spring DUI crackdown is part of Colorado’s “The Heat is On” DUI enforcement campaign, which involves multiple DUI enforcement periods throughout the year, including DUI blitzes during major events such as the Super Bowl and Fourth of July weekend, among others.

Last year’s spring enforcement period resulted in 1,958 DUI arrests, a 26 percent increase from the year before. Of these nearly 2,000 arrests, 191 were made by the Denver Police Department alone. If you are curious, here are the DUI arrest totals reported by CDOT for the five previous years:

  • 2016: 1,555 DUI arrests, including 216 arrests by the Denver Police Department
  • 2015: 1,870 DUI arrests, including 317 arrests by the Denver Police Department
  • 2014: 1,806 DUI arrests, including 311 arrests by the Denver Police Department
  • 2013: 1,709 DUI arrests, including 312 arrests by the Denver Police Department
  • 2012: 1,528 DUI arrests, including 366 arrests by the Denver Police Department

While the numbers may fluctuate from year to year, make no mistake, police will be aggressively enforcing Colorado’s drunk driving laws this spring. So if you are going to be drinking, make sure you have a ride — and leave the car at home.
