Expect increased DUI patrols this holiday season

Surprise! Just a single drink can land drivers behind bars this holiday season. Why? Because Colorado has some of the toughest drunk driving laws in the country, not to mention that police are ramping up DUI patrols for much of December.

In fact, Colorado's "Holiday Party" DUI crackdown started almost immediately after the Thanksgiving DUI blitz finished. And even though the "Holiday Party" crackdown ended December 11, there will be another increased DUI enforcement period around New Year's.

All of these DUI crackdowns are part of Colorado's "The Heat is On" campaign, which consists of 14 DUI enforcement periods that take place throughout the year during the holidays and other large events. So if you decide to have a drink this holiday season, you may face some serious criminal penalties if you decide to get behind the wheel.

Think .08 is the legal limit? Nope, not in Colorado.

While most states set the legal BAC limit at .08 percent, Colorado is not among them. In fact, even though the limit for driving under the influence (DUI) is .08 in Colorado, you can still face charges for driving while ability impaired (DWAI) if your BAC is as low as .05 percentundefined.

Given this very low BAC limit, you can easily see how just a single drink can land you in hot water if you get behind the wheel. So be safe this holiday season.
