National safety report focuses on DUID stats, recommendations

We noted in a recent blog post the growing frequency with which news reports and stories across the country are focusing upon DUID-related matters. Our April 26 entry stressed that such a development “is only natural, given the steady progression of states that are liberalizing their laws regarding the use of recreational and medicinal marijuana.”

An attendant and entirely logical byproduct of that progression is the increased number of driving-and-drug-related traffic stops being made these days by Colorado law enforcers and their peers nationally.

And, of course, given the widespread and growing legality — to some extent — of marijuana, more drivers with a degree of THC (the active chemical compound in cannabis) in their systems are getting into fender benders.

Some of those accidents, unsurprisingly, have serious outcomes, which figuratively drives even more DUID-related subject matter onto the front pages of media outlets.

One prominent example of that links to the widely reported conclusions of a recently released report authored by the Governors Highway Safety Association and a tandem organization.

A central GHSA finding is that drugged driving now accounts for more fatal traffic accidents across the country than does drunk driving.

Such a conclusion will almost certainly lead to progressively heightened enforcement, which one news account of the GHSA report states can be problematic owing to a lack of clear testing standards regarding THC. That report further references the reality that adequate training in drug-related stops is not something that is uniformly in evidence among police officers and highway patrol troopers.

Indeed, there can be significant uncertainty and ambiguity regarding multiple components of a DUID-related motorist-police interaction.

A proven law firm with a specialized practice focus on providing strong criminal defense advocacy for drivers facing substance-linked traffic offenses can help ensure that a client needing legal help is zealously and effectively represented in a DUID case or other traffic matter.
