Why do people make false allegations of rape?

False accusations of rape can ruin a person’s life. It hurts their reputation and impacts everything from social relationships to jobs. It’s important that a victim is believed when he or she comes forward, but it’s equally vital that anyone accused of sexual assault or rape has a chance to defend him or herself. Even the charge itself can impact your life, which is why it’s important to have a defense from the first time you realize you’ll be accused.

False accusations might start off in a number of ways. For example, a boyfriend or girlfriend who breaks up with a short-term partner could find that the partner seeks out revenge by making up a false claim. Some people make up claims just to get attention.

False rape accusations lead to serious problems partially due to the nature of the crime. Rape is assumed to be violent and one of the most despicable crimes there is, which makes people take the side of the victim even when he or she may be lying. Feminism today, for instance, has taken such a heavy stance against rape that many assume that no woman would lie about being raped. Sadly, that’s not true.

It’s estimated that around two out of every 100 rape accusations are false. While that’s a small number of false claims, it shows that they do happen and could be impacting you, too. You have a right to speak out and defend yourself. With the right support, you can fight back and work to win your case while protecting your reputation.
