American soccer legend cited for drunk driving

Abby Wambach is used to having her picture taken.

In fact, Wambach has been in front of cameras much of her life, which is a pretty predictable outcome, giving her sterling soccer-related resume.

Among other things, that shining document readily reveals these accomplishments:

  • With 184 goals, all-time leading American national team scorer
  • Women's World Player of the Year
  • Two-time Olympic gold medal winner
  • World Cup champion, four-time participant

Early yesterday morning, Wambach had her picture taken once again. It is a photo she will undoubtedly remember for the rest of her life, and not one that will share prominent wall space alongside scores of other snapshot memories.

Because it was her so-called mug shot taken following her arrest on a drunk driving charge in Portland, Oregon.

Celebrity status can be somewhat of a double-edged sword. Although a high number of motorists across the country -- and certainly many drivers in Colorado -- were similarly stopped by police officers and charged with DUI over the past weekend, Wambach's photo and DUI story certainly command center stage presently in national media outlets.

Portland police say that Wambach ran through a red light. A police officer states that she was administered field sobriety tests after showing signs of being impaired. Reportedly, she failed those exams, as well as a breath test. She was charged with driving under the influence of intoxicants.

Wambach can certainly reach out to any number of other high-profile Americans who have endured a similar experience. As we have noted in many past blogs, a drinking-and-driving offense is an altogether egalitarian criminal charge that can -- and routinely does -- ensnare people from all walks of life.

Wambach has issued a public apology.

Now she needs to get on with her life. A proven criminal defense attorney can help her do that by working on her behalf to ensure that the legal process plays out in a fundamentally fair manner.
