DUI patrols in early December catch nearly 600 across Colorado

Dubbed a “holiday party DUI patrol,” the Colorado Department of Transportation and local law enforcement agencies — along with state patrols — covered a lot of ground from Dec. 4 to Dec. 14 in their goal to catch impaired drivers. During the massive operation, 596 people were arrested for driving while impaired. There will be another similar campaign over the New Year holiday period, starting on Dec. 30 and running through Jan. 4, 2016.

While holiday patrols during holidays and other key dates is nothing new, the point of bringing this one to your attention is that DUI patrols, no matter when or where they occur, have to be implemented in a legal and proper way.

What this means is that the police have to give the public ample time and notice about the patrols. Additionally, if there are DUI checkpoints involved, the police have to let you know where they will be held. If they fail to do this, any evidence they collected — or charges they handed out — could be thrown out.

Proper police conduct may seem like a given in any situation, but to the contrary, police officers act improperly all of the time. When they do, it opens up the opportunity for the accused individual to question the motives and ethics of the police. This can yield a potent argument for your defense. No matter your case or the charges filed against you, remember that there are many details involved. Any of them could potentially help you.
