Hoops fans and regular readers will no doubt recall that earlier this year we wrote about the run-in Denver Nuggets point guard Ty Lawson had with an area police officer. In late January, Lawson was reportedly pulled over for speeding and then arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.

During the recent NBA draft, Lawson and his friends sat around livestreaming their comments about the proceedings and speculating about the embattled guard’s future with the franchise. NBA observers believe that after the drunken driving arrest, Lawson might have already had one foot out of the Nuggets door, but when he streamed images of himself puffing on a hookah during the draft, he might have effectively put both feet on a path to a new town and new team.

Is that the message he wanted to send by showing himself toking on a hookah? We don’t know. But when the Nuggets drafted guard Emmanuel Mudiay, Lawson said to a friend, “I’m going to Sacramento, bro.”

Former Denver coach George Karl is now coaching the Sacramento Kings and is believed by many fans to be interested in a reunion with Lawson.

News reports at the time of Lawson’s DUI arrest said he admitted to officers that he had been drinking and that he had a previous drunk driving arrest in Missouri.

Lawson failed the field sobriety test and the arresting officer wrote in his report that he noticed slurred speech from the former University of North Carolina standout and that his breath smelled of alcohol.

Has Lawson’s time in Denver gone up in smoke? We’ll see. It should be noted that anyone arrested for driving while under the influence of either alcohol or marijuana should only weigh their legal options after discussing matters with an experienced Denver DUI defense attorney.
