If you live in one of the areas of Colorado famous for its ski resorts, you might well be someone who drinks alcohol on a regular basis. However, new research shows that folks in Aspen and Breckenridge and the like don’t drink heavily. They are more likely to have a glass of wine and then call it an evening, whereas someone in Wisconsin’s Menominee County might barely be getting started with a single glass of wine.
The research published in the American Journal of Public Health is the first to assess drinking patterns county-by-county across the nation. It shows that more than one-third of adults in Menominee County, northwest of Green Bay, are binge drinkers, meaning that when they consume alcohol, they have five or more drinks.
The Centers for Disease Control last year stated that “binge drinkers are 14 times more likely to report alcohol-impaired driving than non-binge drinkers.” Obviously, the risk of DUI and of being categorized as a persistent drunk driver (PDD) rises dramatically for those who drink heavily or regularly binge.
As many readers know, if you have a BAC (blood alcohol content) of 0.17 percent or higher within two hours of driving, you can be declared a PDD and be subject to significant penalties in court as well as at the Department of Motor Vehicles.
We have four DMV officers in Denver:

- A north branch at 2855 Tremont Place
- A northeast location at 4685 Peoria Street #101
- A northwest branch at 3698 W. 44th Avenue
Although the Colorado map we saw in USA Today wasn’t detailed, it certainly appears as if alcohol consumption is above the national average in Denver.
