This past weekend’s Super Bowl will undoubtedly go down as one of the best in the history of the NFL. Of course, the Patriots-Seahawks game would have been infinitely better if the Denver Broncos and Peyton Manning had been the victors instead of Tom Brady and the Pats.
For some Broncos’ fans, the game included a serious penalty call: an arrest for drunken driving. As we noted before the game, enhanced DUI patrols were out across the metro area and now that police reports for the weekend have come in, we learn that 163 Colorado drivers were arrested for driving under the influence during the heightened enforcement period.
The total includes 36 drunk driving arrests here in Denver, as well as 24 arrests by the Aurora Police Department during the Super Bowl enforcement period that began last Friday and ended early this past Monday morning. Interestingly, the Colorado Springs Police Department also made two dozen arrests during its game crackdown.
According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Department reported only five DUI arrests, while El Paso County registered 9.
Each arrested driver now faces a slew of choices, including whether they should engage an attorney experienced in DUI defense or automatically give in and plead guilty or try to take on the court system alone. Negotiating with a prosecutor requires not only a knowledge of the applicable statutes, but also knowledge of which concessions are possible and which are not.Â
