Enhanced DUI enforcement puts heat on Denver drivers tonight

Though it’s expected to be chilly tonight, Denver police and law enforcement agencies across Colorado say the heat will be on drivers who have had too much to drink. “The Heat is On” is the name of the DUI enforcement campaign that kicks into action 12 times a year around holidays.

As we have noted recently, tonight is arguably the biggest party night of the year, so the temperature will definitely be rising as police departments across the state crack down. On New Year’s Eve of last year, more than 400 drivers were arrested for DUI in Colorado.

According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, the Denver Police Department made 49 DUI arrests exactly one year ago tonight. The second highest total in the state was recorded in Aurora, where 36 arrests were made among people ringing in the new year.

Placing third was the Colorado Springs PD, with 28 busts. The Larimer County Sheriff’s Office arrested 26 drivers alleged to be intoxicated that night, and Adams County law enforcement took into custody another 20 motorists.

All of those agencies listed, and many more across the state, plan heightened efforts tonight to look for erratic driving, make traffic stops and arrest anyone who is drinking and driving.

No one wants to start 2015 in jail on a DUI charge and no one wants to deal with the many serious legal repercussions of a drunk driving arrest. So please, before you go out tonight, designate a sober driver who will get you and your friends home safely.

If you can’t find a designated driver, make use of a taxi or ride-sharing service.

Be careful and safe tonight. We’ll be back in this space in 2015.
