Don’t have too much holiday cheer…

On Behalf of | Dec 18, 2014 | Drunk Driving Charges |

Christmas time and New Year’s Eve are for many people the happiest times of year. Friends and families get together to celebrate the bonds that tie us together and to mark the passage of another year together.

However, as many Denver drivers from Christmases past (and New Year’s Eve past) can tell you, it’s also a time when too much holiday cheer can result in a gift no one will treasure: a DUI arrest.

As is typical at this time of year, law enforcement agencies around Colorado have special holiday plans. While many have already increased patrols or dispatched saturation patrols to beef up their DUI enforcement to look for impaired drivers heading home from office holiday parties, more agencies have plans for New Year’s Eve.

For instance, the Denver Police Department has announced that it will have increased patrols from Dec. 30 through Jan. 5, 2015, targeting the lower downtown area. Officers will be paying special attention to people coming from the annual 16th Street mall celebration on New Year’s Eve.

The increased patrols will roll out at 6 p.m. each night and draw to a close at 3 a.m.

Arapahoe County Sheriff’s deputies will conduct DUI saturation patrols in unspecified areas from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. each night from Dec. 30 through Jan. 5. They’ll have an extra pair of deputies on patrol each of those nights, adding a third on New Year’s Eve.

The Aurora Police Department says it’s adding 10 officers to its increased drunk driving enforcement efforts, also from the 30th through the 5th. Their hours will vary slightly, however: they’ll be on duty from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m.

So please be careful and be safe. Appoint a designated driver and enjoy your holidays!
