What’s the worst that can happen after a Halloween DUI?

Denver has a number of college campuses within its city limits and also within the metro area. The University of Colorado, the Community College of Denver, the University of Denver and many others. On a number of those campuses, this Friday night is going to be one of the biggest party events of the year.

It’s also going to be a big night for metro area law enforcement departments, as we have noted previously in our blog. They are going to be out in force on Halloween looking for people driving under the influence, including an expected higher-than-normal number of underage DUI offenders.

For college students arrested on Friday night for DUI, the experience will undoubtedly be for many eye-opening. Others might think it’s not such a big deal. They might well wonder: what’s the worst that can happen after a Halloween DUI?

First of all, there are the obvious things such as loss of your driver’s license, time spent in jail, fees, fines, mandated installation of an ignition interlock device, mandated alcohol awareness classes and so on. But beyond what a court and the Division of Motor Vehicles can do, there are also a number of unanticipated consequences that can befall college students arrested for drunk driving.

Think about these for a moment and see if any might apply to your situation:

  • Potential loss of scholarship
  • Negative impact on future job opportunities
  • Negative impact on future educational opportunities
  • Limiting future housing choices
  • Negative impact on licensure in certain career paths

And of course, there’s the phone call that needs to be made to parents that might include requests for help getting out of jail and help facing the court system and DMV. Parents then often turn to attorneys experienced in DUI defense to help them help their children.
