Former cop pleads guilty to drug crime in Colorado

A former police officer pleaded guilty earlier this week to drug and weapons crimes. The officer had served on the police force in a Colorado city for 22 years. We told you about the officers case in a blog post earlier this month. Now, the man will be held in the county jail until he is sentenced early next year.

According to a report, the prosecutors in the case recommended concurrent sentences for the one count of possession and distribution of Ecstasy and the count of possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime. The sentencing guidelines for these crimes could result in over 12 years in prison.

Although guidelines might be followed, the man could face a much more severe penalty of 10 years in prison for the weapon violation and 20 years in prison for the drug crime. This would lead to a significant portion of any person’s life being spent in prison, and the sentence may not always match the severity of a crime. Speaking with an experienced criminal defense attorney in Colorado might be a wise decision.

They can help a person understand their rights and work to ensure a sentence is fair if a person is convicted. Before a person enters a guilty plea, it is important that they understand what this might mean. When someone enters a guilty plea, they might immediately be placed in custody and they spend their time in jail until they are sentenced. A guilty plea or conviction can also result in difficulty for the person in the future.
