Drug charges can be especially serious. Someone who is accused of a drug crime in the Denver area might be wise to speak with an experienced criminal defense attorney. They can help a person understand their rights after they are arrested and make sure they are protected throughout the legal process.

Two people were recently arrested for alleged drug crimes on the U.S.-Mexico border. Despite both being separate incidents, both individuals were Denver residents. Authorities say one person was arrested after 210 pounds of marijuana were found in her minivan. A man was also arrested in a different location for allegedly having 251 pounds of marijuana in his SUV.

Although police say they aren’t sure where the people were going with the marijuana, Colorado has become a hub for distribution of drugs. When someone is accused of a drug crime, especially one of this magnitude, they could be sentenced to years in prison and severe fines if they are convicted.

A report on the two arrests suggests that the street value of the drugs the people allegedly had were over $200,000 in total. This amount of marijuana could result in federal and state drug charges. After an arrest, a police officer might tell the person that a deal might be able to be worked out. However, many times police officials themselves don’t have authorization to negotiate on these terms. An attorney can be with a person to help them understand their rights. This might include understanding a plea deal or other discussions with authorities.
