Fewer DUI fatalities in Colorado during New Year’s weekend

In our prior post, we discussed the possibility of breathalyzer kiosks showing up in Colorado bars sometime in the future, and how it may result in fewer drunk driving arrests. It appears that Coloradans may not need them, as there were not many DUI arrests during New Year’s weekend according to the Colorado State Patrol.

Authorities made 81 arrests on suspicion of driving under the influence, but the greater statistic was the number of deaths stemming from alcohol related crashes…zero. The state patrol’s chief, Col. James Wolfinbarger, explained in a statement that his office did not have to notify any relatives that a loved one had died in a car accident. This statistic is significant given the risk of fatal crashes during the holiday season. New Year’s Eve is infamously known as the most dangerous day of the year for such accidents.

For those who were arrested, a DUI conviction can be a life-changing (and expensive) experience. You are at risk of spending time in jail, and the administrative penalties can limit your ability to drive. As such, it is important to have an experienced attorney by your side. An experienced criminal defense lawyer can challenge the accounts that led to your arrest, and help you avoid the harsh penalties that come with a criminal conviction. Check out our DUI defense page for more information.

In the meantime, we echo the sentiments from the Colorado State Patrol that if people choose to drink (especially during Saturday’s big game against the Ravens) that they take a cab, use a designated driver or simply do not get behind the wheel.
