Country singer Randy Travis is in the news again, this time for allegations that he was driving drunk and that, when he was found naked, threatened to kill state troopers.
The charges stem from a recent incident in Texas which Travis allegedly crashed his car. The 53-year-old country music star had apparently driven off of the main roadway and ended up on a construction road, where he apparently struck several barricades. Later a passerby allegedly saw Travis lying in the road near his home without any clothes on, and called 911.
When police arrived on the scene, Travis was allegedly combative. Police say that when they came upon Travis, his breath smelled of alcohol and he had several other signs of intoxication. Travis refused to take field sobriety tests. However, a blood-alcohol test was later administered. The results of that BAC test are pending.
Police arrested Travis and transported him to the station. He then allegedly threatened the arresting officers while they were attempting to take him into custody. He allegedly said that he would shoot and kill the state troopers who were responsible for taking him to jail.
Travis was released from jail on $21,500 bond. In addition to facing serious consequences if convicted on the drunk driving charges, the alleged threats against police officers brought him felony retaliation or obstruction charges, which carry a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and/or a fine of up to $10,000.
A representative said that Travis has no comment on the incident.
