DUI Accident Leads to Severe Penalties for Colorado Woman

Anyone facing a DUI charge knows that the situation is serious. Often, it is the first time that people may have had to deal with the police, and they are unsure what to do next. They do not know what is going to happen, and may try to get their case over as soon as possible.

When a person accused of driving under the influence gets into an accident that kills or injures another person, it can be a very difficult time for everyone involved. The case becomes more high-profile and the consequences of a conviction become much more serious.

A Colorado woman was recently found guilty of two counts of vehicular homicide after being involved in an accident that killed one other person on Interstate 25. The woman was driving her vehicle the wrong way, traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of the interstate.

The next day, she was found to have a blood-alcohol content of .219, well over the legal limit in Colorado. The conviction could result in a sentence of up to 12 years in prison for the woman, who will find out what penalties she will receive in August.

This case is another example of how aggressive prosecutors will be in pursuing tough sentences in high-profile DUI cases. They may be unwilling to offer a deal that lessens any of the potential punishments, feeling that they can obtain convictions at a trial.

A conviction will surely result in lengthy prison sentences, so it is important for people facing these charges to present an aggressive defense. Knowing the options that are available can help a person accused of these serious DUI charges make the decisions that are best for each situation.
