Denver-area school sued over teacher’s sexual assault

Three ex-students are suing a suburban Denver high school and its school district over a former teacher who was found guilty of sex crimes. The teacher, who was also a wrestling coach, was recently found guilty in the sexual assault of a student.

In their filing in Denver Federal Court, the former Broomfield High School students allege the school and school district willfully ignored alleged problems with the teacher’s behavior. They claim his inappropriate actions were common knowledge and that many people knew he went out with girls who were seniors at the school. The three students, all of whom are female, claim the school and school district paid no heed to “multiple, repeated warnings” that the man was a “sexual predator.”

Evidently, the school district did not perform a background check before hiring the man. The plaintiffs also claim the man was banned from the school where he worked as a student teacher after he had “inappropriate contact with a female student,” yet Broomfield High School did not take this information into consideration when it added him to its faculty.

The man is serving a life sentence for sexually assaulting one student. The girl in that case had the man for three history classes. She said she never had to do homework because the teacher was going to give her an A in the class, since they had been having a relationship since she was a 15-year-old freshman.

The public does not take kindly to people who are accused of taking advantage of children. In a case like this, however, the man is already paying his debt to society by serving time in prison. He will most likely want to work with a criminal defense attorney to ensure that this case does not make him over-pay for his offenses.
