Cold, hard facts?

As many people have noted, sometimes it’s not the original infraction that results in an arrest, but an attempt at covering it up. That might be the case with two men far from us in Denver.

The pair of New Jersey 20-year-olds were both recently charged with DUI. Police said one of the young men crashed a BMW belonging to a family member and then returned in the cold, early morning to the scene of the accident with a friend and some water. The pair are accused of pouring water on the street to make it appear as if an icy patch caused the crash.

At 2:46 a.m., a police officer on patrol spotted a man walking toward a car parked in the middle of the road. As the officer stopped in front of the vehicle, the young man got into the passenger side of the parked car; his friend was seated in the driver’s seat.

The temperature that morning was 1 degree. Despite the cold, the driver wasn’t wearing a shirt. He told the officer he had fallen and gotten the shirt wet. A bucket of water sat in the back seat, according to a report of events.

After some questioning, police said they determined that the passenger in the parked car had crashed a family member’s BMW while running a stop sign at the intersection. He drove off, and then returned with his friend in his friend’s car with water buckets.

Both men were apparently intoxicated at the time the officer arrived. Both also face a series of charges, including DUI. More charges are possible pending completion of the investigation, police said.

What began with a possible DUI and accident-related charges against one man had evolved into serious accusations against both. The parents of the pair might well enlist experienced attorneys to help their offspring try to avoid the harshest penalties possible.
