Holiday season DUI crackdown looming

On Behalf of | Nov 12, 2014 | Drunk Driving Charges |

Just like that, the holiday season is upon us. Turkeys are looking around anxiously, knowing that Thanksgiving is mere days away. Denver TV stations air commercials blaring about the great savings looming on Black Friday. People are already checking their Christmas gift lists to see who was naughty and who was nice.

With the holidays comes family get-togethers, office parties, social outings with friends and other occasions to celebrate this special time of year. Most of the traveling to these celebrations is done by car, which is why it’s important to designate a sober driver to help make sure everyone gets home safely.

According to the National Safety Commission, Thanksgiving weekend driving is more treacherous than normal for a variety of reasons, including the high traffic volume. Plus, because drivers are often anxious to get to their destinations, they too often drive too fast. Factor in drowsy drivers on long trips and you have another element of danger added to holiday travel.

And of course, there are drivers impaired by alcohol out on the roads as well.

Every year, Colorado State Police and other law enforcement agencies make special efforts to crack down on drunk driving; efforts that include sobriety checkpoints and increased numbers of patrols.

Last year, Colorado police agencies reported 411 DUI arrests over the Thanksgiving weekend, including 50 made by the Denver Police Department. The Aurora Police Department made 30 DUI arrests during the weekend (second most in the state) and the Colorado Springs PD registered the third most with 26.

Many charged with DUI will simply plead guilty and accept whatever punishment the court decides on. Others will fight to retain their driving privileges with the assistance of a DUI defense attorney.
