FBI conducts sex trafficking crackdown

Sex trafficking does not dominate headlines in Denver, but it is a pervasive (and insidious) practice that can ruin many innocent lives. The FBI does not commonly pursue prostitution cases when they involve adults, because they usually leave these types of crimes to state and local law enforcement agencies.

However, there have been many calls to investigate (and stamp out) child sex trafficking rings. Because of this, the FBI conducted a three day sweep across the United States to arrest people suspected of holding teen-age girls against their will who traded sex for money.

The initiative, called “Operation Cross Country” focused on taking “pimps” of the streets. The sweep was the bureau’s largest operation against child sex trafficking. The FBI announced that it arrested individuals in 76 cities across the country, and those taken into custody could face state (as well as federal) human trafficking and sex crimes charges.

Meanwhile, federal agents and local law enforcement recovered more than 100 children during the sweep at truck stops, casinos and motels.

Sex crimes are punished harshly in Colorado. Those convicted of such crimes face long prison sentences as well as continued monitoring, registration requirements and a virtual lifetime of social scrutiny. Even people charged with lower level crimes (i.e. soliciation of prostitution) could have their lives affected.

If you have been charged or believe you are under investigation for a sex crime, it is important to have an experienced criminal defense attorney involved as soon as possible.  A lawyer can give critical advice in handling interviews that could prevent arrests and subsequent charges.
