A 73-year-old woman who was charged with drunk driving and vehicular assault was sentenced recently in a Boulder County court. The woman was originally charged in May after an accident left a University of Colorado student injured.

The accident actually occurred in October. Police reports indicate that the woman was driving on Colorado Avenue in Boulder when she turned into the parking lot of St. Aiden’s Church. She reportedly clipped a food truck while turning and then struck a table where the student was eating lunch before coming to rest in the church’s entryway.

The student suffered a number of broken ribs in the accident. Police say that the woman told them that she was on her way to an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting at the church.

The woman initially pled not guilty to the charges. The vehicular assault charge is a Class 4 felony and the DUI counts are misdemeanors. However, she reversed course and decided to plead guilty. She will serve 60 days in jail and have five years of probation. As part of her sentence, she will perform 96 hours of community service.

Drunk driving in Colorado is a problem that will garner headlines as the summer progresses. Additional patrols will be out during holiday weekends (such as the Fourth of July) as law enforcement focuses on keeping drunk drivers off the road.

For those who are charged with drunk driving, it is important to have the advice and guidance of an experienced attorney. While not mentioned in the report, an attorney’s help in negotiating a plea agreement is an important part of the criminal process.
