Fourth of July brings out additional patrols

The Fourth of July holiday is synonymous with barbeques, fireworks and Rockies baseball. However, it is also known for being one of the most dangerous times of the year for drivers on Colorado highways. Next week’s holiday is the most popular summer event and people tend to consume more alcohol. Because of this, law enforcement agencies across the state will be ramping up patrols to take suspected drunk drivers off the road.

Last year, the U.S. Department of Transportation sponsored the 100 Days of Heat, a special program that set aside money for additional drunk driving enforcement during the 100 days of summer.

The “Heat” will be back this summer, as it has been over the past 15 years. The message from law enforcement will be the same as well. They wish to educate the public on how dangerous drinking and driving can be, as well as the potential penalties offenders could be held responsible for.

Moreover, authorities want to prevent alcohol related accidents, which are the most tragic because they are the easiest to prevent. By simply taking alternate transportation or using a designated driver, lives could be saved.

While drunk driving (and impaired driving) is a crime in Colorado, not everyone who is arrested is actually guilty of DUI. It is not uncommon for police officers to act rashly or make mistakes in evaluating whether someone is under the influence. As such, it is helpful to consult an experienced criminal defense attorney should you be charged with a crime.
