Man impaled by drunk driver who was a drug counselor

We have heard of many bizarre stories about drunk driving. We may laugh at some of the antics that come about, others are downright appalling. The story of a California woman driving drunk and hitting a pedestrian and who allegedly kept going (while the person was stuck to the car) falls in the latter category.

According to an ABC News.com report, the woman struck the pedestrian causing him to roll onto the hood and crash through the car's windshield. The woman reportedly continued to drive on for more than 2 miles before bystanders called police who forced her to stop.

The woman told police that she panicked when she hit the man, and that was why she kept driving. The man remained alive while embedded in the windshield, but later died when he was taken to the hospital.

The woman took a breathalyzer test after the accident, and her BAC was reportedly twice the legal limit. She was charged with driving under the influence, felony hit and run and manslaughter. She is reportedly a recovering addict who was working as a chemical dependency counselor. The company where she worked explained to ABC News that many counselors are recovering addicts, which lends an extra sense of irony to the situation. While she may have been helping others with their sobriety, it appears that she was in the midst of her own relapse.

We may never know what the woman was going through prior to the accident, but it appears that sobriety is a long-term, day-by-day exercise that can lead to tragedies if unaddressed.
