DUI Accidents Increasing Fatalities in Colorado?

On Behalf of | Jun 8, 2012 | Vehicular Assault or Homicide |

As we approach the halfway point of the year, law enforcement officials often like to take a look back to see if they can spot any trends that are currently happening throughout the state. If there are certain crimes that seem to be on the rise, changes can be made to increase enforcement or adjust resources accordingly.

This year, police and other government officials are most concerned about the increase of traffic fatalities within Colorado. According to the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), deaths in auto accidents have increased 19 percent over the same time period in 2011. Officials are pointing to the number of people who are driving under the influence as the main reason for the rise in traffic deaths.

Numbers on impaired drivers in accidents is not yet available for 2012, but CDOT reports that 41 percent of 2011 fatal crashes involved alcohol. With that in mind, law enforcement is stepping up DUI enforcement.

Over the Memorial Day weekend, police arrested 479 people for driving under the influence, including 34 people at sobriety checkpoints. Further checkpoints are being planned by the Aurora, Lakewood and Westminster police departments.

Each year, new laws are proposed that would increase the penalties for a DUI conviction. It is important to take these charges seriously. A conviction may result in the loss of a driver’s license, as well as additional penalties such as jail time or high fines.

Those convicted may also have difficulty finding employment, or lose certifications or professional licenses that are necessary to remain employed. Drivers will also face increased insurance costs. Penalties will increase if a motorist is a repeat DUI offender.

Know the options that are available for your situation. Once you know what you can do to build a strong defense, you will be able to make the decisions that are best for you and your future.
