If you have been accused of a crime, it is extremely important that you understand your rights. A criminal conviction can create serious consequences. For example, some penalties include lengthy jail time. In recent news, a local Colorado man was sentenced to 10 years in prison for vehicular homicide.

According to reports, drivers reported seeing an SUV driving eastbound in the westbound lanes near the Quebec exit on I-70. Subsequently, one witness viewed the car abruptly collide into an oncoming vehicle. The crash killed the driver in the oncoming car. Prosecutors say that the man was driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. His blood alcohol content was around 0.273 when his car hit the victim’s vehicle. The legal threshold for a drunk driving in Colorado is 0.08.

The victim’s daughter explains, “That night I lost a father. I lost some joy that I had in my heart. I won’t get any of that back. That stuff is gone.”

Nevertheless, in the midst of his sentencing hearing, the man told the Denver judge that he was sorry for his actions. He added, “All of the apologies will never undo the hatred and the pain I have caused.”

This story is an example of how facing criminal charges can be a very emotional experience for all of the players involved. Furthermore, the criminal justice system is also a technically complex arena. Even if you are guilty of a crime, there are varying degrees of charges and sentences. For this reason, if you are confronting criminal accusations, you may benefit from speaking to an attorney. A lawyer can assist your trek through this intricate legal system.
