Colorado 'sexting' allegation escalates to sexual assault charge

For the most part, we see technology as making our lives easier and more entertaining. But we consistently see, too, how technology can land a person in trouble with the law. In particular, you have probably heard stories about "sexting." Despite the relatively cutesy name, sexting can lead to serious ends.

Youth often winds up in trouble related to sexting, which is basically sending sexual messages and/or images via text message to another person. But a current Colorado case shows how even adults can fall into the line of fire related to the technological sexting trend. A former school board member has some extremely serious sex crime charges to battle.

According to news reports, the 37-year-old ex-school board member was first accused of sending a teenage student sexually suggestive texts. That alone resulted in her being charged with Internet luring of a child. But the serious matter didn't end there, and now the defendant is fighting a much more serious charge -- sexual assault of a child by someone in a position of trust.

Many details behind the allegations are being kept private, likely because at least one minor is involved in the Colorado sex crime matters. Still left to be confirmed is whether the sexual assault charge is connected to the same 14-year-old who allegedly received the sex-related texts from the defendant.

We will follow this story and report on any new developments. While some in the public and media think it's funny to make light of this kind of case, it is no joking matter to the defendant. She represents a school district, meaning that these allegations not only affect her but could also affect the well-being of the district she used to work for. On top of that, of course, is the reality that the defendant would be sentenced to at least two years in prison if convicted. The maximum possible sentence is life.
