DNA test contributes to sex assault charge against NFL's Cox

We have written about the criminal case against Denver Broncos player Perrish Cox on multiple occasions. Details about the sexual assault case have been a long time coming because of attorneys' requests for the arrest affidavit related to the incident to be kept private.

Ultimately, the Colorado Supreme Court ruled that the media and public's Constitutional rights held more weight than lawyers' arguments to protect the affidavit. Late last month, the information was released, and it became more evident why privacy may have been sought. Sources report that a pregnancy was involved in the arrest of Cox.

As we have reported in previous posts, the criminal charges against Cox stem from a September 2010 incident. The alleged rape victim in the case claims that she went to an apartment with the defendant and other players on the night in question and passed out. When she woke up, she believed that intercourse had taken place, though she couldn't remember anything about it.

Her suspicion regarding Cox developed in the following October, after she found out that she was pregnant. A paternity test identified Cox as the father. He is charged with sexual assault while the victim was physically helpless and sexual assault while the victim was incapable of determining the nature of the conduct. He has pleaded not guilty to both counts and will face trial beginning Oct. 18.

As always, we will post an update with any new developments in this high-profile case. These are obviously serious allegations. If Cox is found guilty, he could spend many years in prison. Even if found not guilty, the charges have and will take a toll on his life and reputation. The case alone now has the Broncos considering his suspension pending trial.
